I would really encourage all the charities listed through Echoage to make sure they are listed on Charity Navigator ( [www.charitynavigator.org] ). This site allows potential donors to see how much of the donations go to administrative support, promotion, and directly to charity actions.

Due to a large number of poorly run charities here in the south, I hesitate to consider new charities unless they are as transparent as possible and regularly reviewed by independant means. Luckily, several of the charities listed here have high marks from Charity Navigator, and those are the ones we considered when choosing for our child's birthday both last year and this year. I always reccomend some type of giving to those planning children's parties, but I also reccomend giving in a smart way - use an independant measure of a charity's impact before passing on your dollars.

I think Echoage's fee for administrating and co-ordinating giving is fair considering the work it takes to run such a nice website. A link to Charity Navigator, or another similar charity evaluation tool, would be a nice value-ad for those of us seeking to give wisely.

The Hospital for Sick Children, one of ECHOage's Charity Partners, have been incredibly busy with such innovative and important work.

They announced today that they signed a "significant" five-year contract advising a new children's hospital in Qatar, the first of many international business opportunities to boost revenues at home. The contract involves advising Hamad Medical Corp. on how to staff and equip the new facility in Qatar's capital, Doha, which is scheduled to open in 2012. Also, Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children is the first in Canada to offer a surgical option for obese children. Bariatric surgery is usually only performed on people who are dangerously obese. It involves reducing the size of the patient’s stomach. The new program at SickKids is for 12 to 17-year-olds with ‘complex obesity,’ meaning children who are overweight due to brain tumours, or who have heart disease complicated by obesity.
Over twenty years ago, Worlds AIDS Day (WAD) was created and is always observed on December 1st - which is TODAY!!!

WAD is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007,and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007,making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007, of which about 270,000 were children.

Think about all the children who are suffering because of AIDS and contribution to World's Aids Day - everyone is involved!

It never ceases to amaze me how kids are now choosing to help other kids across North America. Not only are they concerned about each other and want to help, but they are also deeply aware of the planet, environment and their communities.

They want to make change.....and they can help by having an ECHOage birthday party. The donated dollars from an ECHOage birthday party can fight the children’s literary crisis, plant trees and shrubs, serve meals, send a kid who has cancer to a summer camp, provide information about anaphylaxis, create healthy home environments, and so much more!

As the Official ECHOAge Charity Ambassador, I know that each Charity Partner is incredibly thankful, impressed and humbled by the power of giving - especially from kids.

Do you know a kid who is making a difference?

Please feel free to tell the tales, make us laugh, shed a tear, but most importantly this is a place to SHARE.

Enjoy the day!
