Last week we were making the 1.5 hour drive to our in-laws house in the country. My daughter had invited a friend and the three kids were in the back seat chit -chatting away with not a care in the world. Up front, my husband and I were listening to a radio documentary on geriatric sex. According to the program, STDs are on the rise amongst the aged because they are not hard wired to use condoms to prevent disease – they think condoms are only used for birth control. One segment of the doc had a nurse using a banana to demonstrate how to use a condom.
Suddenly all was quiet in the back seat. My daughter sheepishly asked; “what is a condom?” Taken off guard, our response was pathetic. “Um, uhh a condom is something a dad would put on his penis if he um decided he didn’t want to get a mom pregnant.” Our kids know how babies are made, but STDs and contraceptives have not yet made it into the discussions.
After a few uncomfortable moments, my son blurts out…”so that nurse doesn’t want that banana to get pregnant?”
I guess it’s time for another discussion…I’ll keep you posted.
